Why Was This Drunk On Duty Officer Not Charged Accordingly?

A Mount Pleasant Police sergeant has been fired and charged after being found intoxicated while on duty, according to authorities.

Officials said that, on July 3, they received a call for an individual passed out inside a vehicle.

Responding police located a marked police SUV parked near the East Cooper Airport. Inside, they located Sergeant Matt Kinard passed out with an open beer can between his legs.

Kinard was escorted back to the department where he was met by superiors. Officials determined that Kinard was intoxicated while on duty.

Chief Carl Ritchie immediately fired Kinard. The former sergeant was charged with public intoxicated and was released on a Courtesy Summons.

“The criminal consequences are consistent with those a non-law enforcement member of our community would be exposed to and we should not be expected to be treated differently in this circumstance. I am very disappointed that one of our police supervisors would conduct himself in this manner,” Ritchie said.

So, let me get this straight. A police officer was found drunk with an open container in a police vehicle while on duty and the only charge they gave him was “public intoxicated”?!???!?!? Was he not operating a marked police vehicle? Was he not carrying a gun? How the fuck could this individual only get a “Courtesy Summons” and have the chief claim that “The criminal consequences are consistent with those a non-law enforcement member of our community would be exposed to”? That is an outright lie. Any other member of the community that was found drunk with an open container while in control of a vehicle while carrying a firearm would have a plethora of charges. At the minimum, they would have been arrested. According to the chief you can pass out drunk in your car while carrying a gun and they will just give you a summons.  This is ridiculous and needs to be investigated further. Special treatment for these “few bad apples” needs to stop. This is an insult to every civilian that has had any interaction with these corrupt officers.  I hope every case this officer was involved in is reopened and over turned. These officers need to be held accountable.
